PALCS Student Wins International String Competition

The good news keeps on coming for PALCS 11th grader William McGregor. On Saturday, May 13, 2017, at the 42nd Stulberg International String Competition, 17-year-old William won first place and the gold medal for the double bass.

The competition took place at the Dalton Center Recital Hall in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The field of competition started with 170 applicants from all around the world and was narrowed down to 12 semi-finalists who were invited to Kalamazoo to compete for the top prizes.

As the first place winner, William will receive a $6,000 prize and three performances with various orchestras from Michigan to Baltimore. “We are thrilled,” said Williams’s mother, Nancy. “He made the final six and then had another round and then he won!”

According to the Stulberg website, Judges of the competition included David Kim (violin), Yizhak Schotten (viola), and Amid Peled (cello). For a video stream of the performances that took place at the competition, visit www.stulberg.org.

William, also a student at the Juilliard School Pre-College Division and a member of the University Scholars program, was previously selected as a National YoungArts Foundation Merit winner back in January of this year.

We could not be more proud and honored to have such a bright and talented young man represent our school and community. On behalf of all of us at PALCS, congratulations on your first place win, William! We can’t to see all that your future holds!
